Rodrigo’s multi-record effort highlights 38-7 Junior Bowl victory despite rule changes restricting kickers
Game-by-game summaries listed below
Updated through Feb. 26, 2014
Rodrigo was the game’s top scorer and outpointed the East all by himself with a career-best 12 points from three field goals and three extra points.
In a game where the touchback rule was suspended and the kickoff yard line was moved back to the 35 (not to mention a brisk wind gusting to 20-plus miles per hour), Rodrigo’s kickoffs still averaged 62 yards with a pair of 70-plus kickoffs that yielded touchbacks. Rodrigo also perfectly executed a self-recovery onside kick in the first half, only to have the West penalized 5 yards for procedure — game organizers were not allowing onside attempts until the fourth quarter, information they had not shared with the West coaching staff. Kicking from the 30-yard-line, Rodrigo still managed a kickoff down to the 7.
Rodrigo also helped his squad secure two more points with a perfectly executed coffin-corner punt that hit the out of bounds line on the 6-yard-line. On the first play, a bad snap into the end zone was covered by the East, resulting in a safety for the West.
Rodrigo established personal bests for points in a game (12), field goals made in a game (3), field goals attempted in a game (5) and punt hang time (4.80 seconds).
Rodrigo finished the season with career bests in total points (73), field goals made (14) and field goals attempted (23). The high winds prevented any attempt at surpassing his touchback mark of 50 in 2012, and he finished with 45.
Rodrigo extended his record number of 70-yard kickoffs to 22, and extended his record number of 4.0-second hang times to 34 with a couple measuring 4.01 and 4.06. For the game, Rodrigo’s kickoff hang times averaged 3.94 seconds, with a worst of 3.82 seconds and a best of 4.06. The high kickoffs restricted the East returners to a 17-yard average return. Rodrigo’s combined kickoffs and punts yielded an average field position for the East of the 21-yard-line; it managed to drive the field only once.
