Preseason praise: Rodrigo named to NFL.com’s All-Under-25 team for 2021
Updated through October 5, 2021
Rodrigo earned a bit of preseason publicity recently when he was named to NFL.com’s All-Under-25 team as selected by Nick Shook.
Following an impressive rookie season when he established several rookie kicking records for the Colts franchise, Rodrigo entered his second season facing competition for his job in the person of Eddie Pineiro, a familiar foe.
Pineiro played at Florida at the same time that Rodrigo played for the Georgia Bulldogs, and they met in Jacksonville twice. Their duel for the starting job began when training camp opened on July 27, and ended a few weeks later when Pineiro was waived after the Colts’ second preseason game.
Rodrigo totaled 143 points in 2020, converting 32 field goals and 47 extra points to lead the Colts in scoring while surpassing Raul Allegre’s rookie marks from 1983 in field goals, extra points and total points.
Teammate running back Jonathan Taylor was also named to the All-Under-25 team.
Postseason praise: Rodrigo chosen to NFL all-rookie team for 2020
Following his 2016 redshirt freshman season at Georgia, Rodrigo was chosen to the SEC’s All-freshman squad as well as being named a first-team freshman All-American. Four years later, the Marietta, Ga. native has repeated history on the next level as he has been selected as one of four Indianapolis Colts on the NFL’s 2020 all-rookie team as chosen by the Professional Football Writers of America.
Joining the former Bulldog great on the all-rookie unit are Colts teammates Jonathan Taylor (running back), Isaiah Rodgers (kick returner) and Jordan Glasgow (special teams).
Also being named to the all-rookie squad was Kansas City Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend, former University of Florida star. Rodrigo and Townsend were one-time teammates in January of 2015 for the East team in the annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio’s Alamodome.
Rodrigo’s rookie season included three games when he made 4 field goals — against the Vikings, Bears and Packers. Against Green Bay, his fourth field goal was an overtime game-winner from 39 yards that gave the Colts a 34-31 victory and earned him AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Rodrigo surpassed the Colts’ franchise rookie records for points, field goals and extra points.
Nearly a year after final kick, Rodrigo’s legacy gathers honor and glory for UGA
Six months after executing his final collegiate kick, Rodrigo completed his overwhelming journey through athletic and academic success with more impressive recognition on national, conference and campus levels.
In mid-June, the 2019 Lou Groza Award winner from Marietta’s Sprayberry High School was named University of Georgia’s male representative for the Southeastern Conference’s 2020 Roy F. Kramer Athlete of the Year Award, officially making the 6-1, 191-pound place kicker/kickoff specialist the Bulldogs’ male athlete of the year for all sports, echoing his senior year of high school, when his classmates voted him both Most Athletic and Most Likely To Become a Professional Athlete; he is now the place kicker for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. Rodrigo’s female UGA counterpart for the Kramer award is gymnast Sabrina Vega. LSU quarterback Joe Burrow won the Kramer award.
In late May, Rodrigo was chosen as the 2020 Arthur Ashe Jr. Male Sports Scholar of the Year for collegiate athletes of color, winning over four other national finalists. Rodrigo’s Brazilian heritage qualified him for the honor. The SEC made it a clean sweep of the Ashe award as swimmer Raena Eldridge of Texas A&M captured the female award. Rodrigo is the third UGA athlete to be honored by the Ashe foundation, as female basketball player Haley Clark won in 2018 and gymnast Marcia Newby won in 2010; no other university has had more than one winner, including North Carolina State, represented by NFL star quarterback Russell Wilson in 2011.
Rodrigo was also chosen by the UGA athletics department as the Dawgs’ representative for the H. Boyd McWhorter Post-Graduate Scholarship, receiving $10,000 toward his Master’s Degree in Journalism/Emerging Media. His female counterpart is tennis player Elena Christofi.
Worth noting on Rodrigo’s lengthy list of accomplishments during his record-setting UGA career is being named the 2019-20 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year (announced during the SEC championship game against LSU), first team Academic All-American, first team athletic All-American by 5 entities including Walter Camp, first team All-SEC, first team freshman All-American, first team all-SEC freshman, SEC Academic Honor Roll every year of college, Campbell Trophy finalist that included an $18,000 academic scholarship, Burlsworthy Trophy finalist, Vince Lombardi Award semifinalist, Danny Wuerffel Trophy semifinalist and, of course, claiming his position’s version of the Heisman Trophy — the Lou Groza Award, bestowed on the nation’s best place kicker/kickoff specialist.
Rodrigo obliterates UGA record book, becoming all-time leader in 10 categories, adding 10 seconds and 8 thirds
Rodrigo completed his storied Georgia career with an 8-point, 5-touchback performance in the Dawgs’ 26-14 victory over Baylor in the New Year’s Day Sugar Bowl game in the New Orleans Superdome, adding to his program-busting statistics and confirming his status as the most prolific kicker in UGA history.
Flipping through the updated pages of the UGA record book, one will discover Rodrigo’s name at the top of 10 categories as well as his name appearing 10 times in second place, 8 times in third place, four times in fourth place, two 5ths, two 7ths, one 9th and a 10th. That totals up to 38 appearances in the Dawgs’ record book.
Rodrigo is the all-time leader in career points (440), career field goal percentage (82.5), career touchbacks (234), career consecutive PATs (200), career PAT percentage (100, tied with Brandon Coutu, who had 86 fewer attempts), single-season PAT percentage (100, acieved 4 times, tied with several others), single-season touchbacks (82), consecutive touchbacks (23), most touchbacks in a game (8, achieved 3 times), and longest field goal in a bowl game (55 yards in the 2018 Rose Bowl game vs. Oklahoma).
He is second all-time in single-season PATs (65), career PATs (200), career PATs attempted (200), most field goals in one game (4, achieved 4 times and shared with several others), field goals made in a season (27), field goals made in a career (80), consecutive field goals made (14, tied with two others), most points scored in a game (17), single-season touchbacks (67) and consecutive touchbacks (18).
Rodrigo is third in most PATs in a game (9), most PATs in a season (63), most PATs attempted in a season (65), field goals attempted in a season (33), kicking points in a season (127), most games with at least 2 field goals in a career (23), most 50-plus-yard field goals in a career (6, tied with three others), and single-season touchbacks (65).
He is also fourth in single-season PAT attempts (63), career field goal attempts (97), games with at least one field goal made (41), and single-season points (123) while ranking fifth in single-season points (122) and single-season field goal percentage (87.0).
Rodrigo remains listed 10 times in the CFP record book, including 6 times as leader plus 3 seconds and one third. He also broke the SEC all-time record for consecutive extra points with his 200 career total, slipping by Auburn’s Daniel Carlson, who made all 198 of his attempts during his career.
Spring showers Rodrigo with four more academic honors
Georgia’s 2019 spring football period ended on April 20 with the annual G-Day game at Sanford Stadium, and two days later Rodrigo was bestowed with a quartet of off-field academic honors.
The football program honored him with an award for highest GPA for the senior class (3.68). During its yearly banquet, the UGA chapter of the National Football Foundation designated Rodrigo as its annual winner of the Jack Turner Award for senior football players who excel on and off the field; the chapter also gave Rodrigo the Billy Payne Award, presented for graduating from UGA with more than a 3.0 GPA.
Also at the NFF’s banquet, Rodrigo received his third straight Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll plaque. Rodrigo was graduated from UGA’s Grady College of Journalism last December, and is enrolled in a graduate program specializing in emerging media.
Previous winners of the Jack Turner Award include current NFL players David Andrews, Chris Conley, Malcolm Mitchell and Maurice Smith.
Rodrigo shares special teams MVP award with Hardman
After three seasons of trying, Rodrigo at last achieved one of his most precious personal objectives. At the Bulldogs’ annual awards gala on Dec. 2 in Athens, the redshirt junior from Marietta was recognized as the team’s Most Valuable Special Teams Player for his achievements in place-kicking and kickoffs.
Rodrigo shared the MVP distinction with return specialist Mecol Hardman, one of the SEC’s most dangerous punt and kickoff returners.
In 2017, Hardman was given the MVP award while Rodrigo was singled out as Most Improved special teams participant, the same award he was given as a freshman. Rodrigo has led the Dawgs in scoring for three years in a row, and has broken the school touchback record two years in a row.
Also during the banquet, Rodrigo was recognized for academic success, for his practice/game performances and was presented with a plaque designating him as the Bulldogs’ representative to the 2018 SEC Football Community Service team in recognition of his volunteer efforts dedicated to Dawg Nation. A few days after the gala, Rodrigo was named to the All-SEC second team as kicker.
In early October, Rodrigo was chosen as the Dawgs’ representative on ESPN’s listing of Unsung Heroes for teams ranked in the top 25 in the country.
Rodrigo, who was the only player from the SEC named to this year’s Allstate AFCA Good Works Team for his dedication to the community and performances on the field and in the classroom, is a member of the UGA Athletic Association’s Leadership Academy (L.E.A.D.) and has been a visitor at Camp Sunshine, which provides support programs for children with cancer and their families.
Among his numerous community service appearances, Rodrigo has dressed as Santa Claus for an Athens-area Christmas party, has made anti-domestic violence and anti-bullying videos, has addressed hundreds of elementary school children and volunteered for the “Empty Bowl” luncheon, sponsored by the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, and with the Extra Special People (ESP) group, an organization assisting individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.
Also in November, Rodrigo was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award for the second year in a row, but was not chosen among the thee finalists.
Instead, the three finalists are Cole Tracy (LSU), Andrew Szmyt (Syracuse) and Cooper Rothe (Wyoming). Tracy and Szmyt are place kickers only–they are sitting on the bench when their teams kick off. Rothe does both — he has 76 points as a place kicker while Rodrigo has 115, and he has 29 touchbacks while Rodrigo has 74. Rothe’s touchback percentage is 53 while Rodrigo’s is 84.
The redshirt junior from Marietta has converted 19 of 22 field goal attempts (86 percent) this season as well as all 58 of his extra point attempts for a total of 115 points. He has also tallied 74 touchbacks from 88 conventional kickoffs, a percentage of 84. For his career, Rodrigo has made 53 of 63 field goal tries for the Bulldogs, and his 84.1 percent success rate is the school’s career best.
Rodrigo also has piled up 161 career touchbacks, only 8 short of Kevin Butler’s career total of 169. Georgia has at least two games remaining, and Rodrigo is averaging 6.2 touchbacks per game along with his 9.58 points per game. Rodrigo is second nationally in total touchbacks and fourth nationally in touchback percentage.
Rodrigo named to Good Works team and also chosen SEC Player of the Week
Nominated along with 168 other FBS football players earlier in the summer, Rodrigo made the final cut for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team recognizing community service, being announced as one of the 11 FBS team members on Sept. 13.
The redshirt junior from Marietta is the only SEC player on the squad, and he is also the fifth straight Georgia player to be selected, following Chris Conley, Malcolm Mitchell, Jeb Blazevich and Aaron Davis. Rodrigo is the 19th Bulldog selected, most of any university in the award’s 26-year history.
The off-field honor follows Rodrigo’s selection as the SEC’s Special Teams Player of the Week for his outing at South Carolina where he was successfully converting all of his place kicks and neutralizing South Carolina’s potent kickoff return game with deep touchbacks.
Rodrigo contributed 11 points and 7 touchbacks to the Dawgs’ 41-17 victory over South Carolina, which was stymied after each Georgia score when Rodrigo’s kickoffs would sail over the head of return specialist Deebo Samuel, who never got a touch on the ball in the Sept. 8 game at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, S.C.
It was Rodrigo’s second effective game in a row, following up on his 9-point, 8-touchback performance in the season-opening 45-0 romp over Austin Peay. He now leads the Dawgs in scoring with 20 points and has accumulated 15 touchbacks from 15 kickoffs.
Rodrigo’s previous SEC Player of the Week honor came in the 2016 season after he kicked four field goals including the game-winner as time expired in a 27-24 road victory over Kentucky.
Preseason recognition for Rodrigo
On Aug. 21, ESPN released its All-American squad, and Rodrigo was listed as the place kicker. ESPN did not release a second team. On the same day, the Associated Press announced its annual preseason All-American units, and Rodrigo was named to the second team. Teammate D’Andre Baker, a defensive back, was chosen to the AP first team but was not included among ESPN’s team members.
Rodrigo was named to six preseason All-American teams. Sports Illustrated and ESPN picked him for the first team, while the Associated Press, CBSSports and Sporting News placed him on their second teams and Athlon put him on its third team.
On August 15 Sports Illustrated also named Rodrigo No. 100 on its list of the best college football players in the nation regardless of position.
Rodrigo accumulated well over a dozen honors during the off-season. On July 25, Rodrigo was included on the Lou Groza Award watch list as one of 30 candidates for the best kicker in the country; he was a Groza semifinalist in 2017. On July 26, Rodrigo was announced as one of 106 candidates for the Wuerffel Award, given for community service among FBS players.
At the conclusion of SEC Media Days the week of July 16-20 in Atlanta, the SEC released its official preseason teams as voted on by 285 members of the news media, and the Sprayberry High School product was one of three Bulldogs selected to the first team; the others are defensive backs D’Andre Baker and J.R. Reed. In late August, the SEC’s head coaches released their preseason All-SEC teams, and Rodrigo was again named to the first team — along with Baker and Reed.
During the beginning of SEC Media Days, Allstate announced its nominees for its annual AFCA (American Football Coaches Association) Good Works teams, an honor that recognizes off-field activities and community service by college football players. Rodrigo was one of 12 SEC players on the list, representing the University of Georgia. The list of 169 nominees will be reduced to a pair of 11-man teams, one for FBS and the other for the remaining levels of participation. Rodrigo finds himself in fine company. Eighteen UGA representatives, most of any university, have been chosen for the final team in the award’s 26-year history, including the last four years — Chris Conley in 2014, Malcolm Mitchell in 2015, Jeb Blazevich in 2016 and Aaron Davis in 2017.
Two of Rodrigo’s most recent community service appearances were participation in the annual Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer golf event with Athens area businessmen and a visit to Camp Sunshine with most of his teammates to mingle with challenged children. Rodrigo also spent a July weekend in Birmingham, Ala. participating in the SEC’s leadership conference for athletes from member schools.
Rodrigo has been named a consensus SEC first team selection by a half-dozen publications. In early July, college football website Saturday Down South published its staff selections for preseason All-SEC, and Rodrigo was a unanimous choice as kicker by the seven SDS staffers. Teammate D’Andre Baker was also a unanimous pick, and several other Bulldogs were named at least once, including Andrew Thomas, D’Andre Swift, Lamont Gaillard, Jake Fromm, D’Andre Walker, J.R. Reed and Mecol Hardman. Also in mid-July, the Louisville Courier-Journal named Rodrigo as first team preseason All-SEC kicker.
Finally, Rodrigo was also included in the recently released NCAA.com preseason All-Name Team. Among others also named were Baer Hunter, Bumper Pool, Hasan Defense, Eddie McDoom and Rusty Staats. UGA teammate D’Andre Swift was chosen at running back.
Athlon magazine, Street & Smith’s magazine, Phil Steele’s College Preview magazine and GameDay magazine join the AP in listing Rodrigo as a first-team All-SEC selection while Lindy’s magazine places Rodrigo on the All-SEC second team. Additionally, AL.com released results of its poll of SEC sports information directors listing the best players in the SEC; Rodrigo was chosen as the place kicker/kickoff specialist.
Rodrigo chosen to quartet of all-bowl teams
For the first time in eight seasons Rodrigo was not selected to at least one All-American team at the end of the 2017 season, but a few late-breaking accolades did help end the redshirt sophomore’s campaign on a very bright note as he was selected to no fewer than four all-bowl teams. With the conclusion of the CFP final on Jan. 8 when Alabama defeated Rodrigo and his Georgia teammates 26-23 in overtime, ESPN, USA Today Sports, BleacherReport.com and SouthernPigskin.com published All-Bowl Teams, and Rodrigo was chosen as the place-kicker by all four groups, outpolling the other 79 kicking specialists from the 40-bowl-game season.
Rodrigo had the advantage of playing twice as Georgia advanced through the College Football Playoff semifinal with a 54-48 double-overtime victory over Oklahoma followed by the loss to Alabama in the final. Rodrigo had his name entered into the CFP record book no fewer than 9 times, including most kicking points in a final (11), most kicking points in two games (23, tied for first), most field goals in two games (5, tied for first), most field goals in a final (3), longest field goal in a semifinal (55 yards) and longest field goal in a final (51 yards).
Georgia teammate Sony Michel was named to all four teams, while Roquan Smith was named three times, D’Andre Baker twice and Cameron Nizialek, Isaiah Wynn and Jonathan Ledbetter once each. In team award-giving, Rodrigo was selected UGA Special Teams Most Improved Player for the second season in a row.
Another academic honor for Rodrigo
In early February, the Southeastern Conference announced its Academic Honor Roll for the fall 2017 semester, and Rodrigo was listed once again. The redshirt sophomore was one of 34 football players named among the total of 85 Georgia athletes on the SEC’s list. Rodrigo is a digital and broadcast journalism major, and is listed as an academic senior for the spring 2018 semester with a cumulative GPA of 3.7. He has been named to either the SEC Honor Roll or Athletic Director’s Dean’s List or both every semester he has been eligible during his UGA tenure.
Rodrigo earns Freshman All-American honors from FWAA
Rodrigo’s redshirt freshman season for the Georgia Bulldogs now includes his elevation to All-American status for the 2016 campaign. The 6-foot-1, 192-pound place kicker was named to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-American team on Jan. 9. Rodrigo and tight end Isaac Nauta were selected along with four other representatives from the Southeastern Conference. Georgia, Florida and Ohio State were the only teams with two selections.
The FWAA is composed of more than 1,400 sportswriters who cover football nationally. It is the 16th Freshman All-American team the group has selected. The team is composed of 34 first-year players, either true or redshirt freshmen. In December, Campusinsiders.com selected Rodrigo as an honorable mention All-American place kicker, behind first team pick Louis Zervo of Ohio University and second teamer Ricky Aguayo of Florida State.
Rodrigo’s placement probably was restricted by his season numbers; he took over point-scoring duties in the fourth game of the season and finished as Georgia’s regular-season leading scorer with 61 points, then later adding 7 points in Georgia’s 31-23 Liberty Bowl victory over TCU.
Also in December, he was named to 247sports.com’s freshman All-American squad (there was no second team or honorable mentions), but he was replaced later in the day with a notation that only true freshmen were eligible. Rodrigo redshirted last fall behind senior Marshall Morgan. Rodrigo was chosen to various All-American teams in seventh through 12th grade, capped by his appearance for the East team in the annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio’s Alamodome his senior year. His selection by FWAA as well as Campusinsiders.com thus becomes his seventh straight eligibility year of being accorded All-American status by at least one service.
Rodrigo selected to SEC’s all-freshman squad
Rodrigo capped his outstanding redshirt freshman season by being selected to the Southeastern Conference’s all-freshman team, released on Dec. 8. Rodrigo was joined on the team by current Georgia teammate Isaac Nauta at tight end, and also by former Sprayberry High School teammate Jabari Zuniga, defensive end from Florida.
Rodrigo led the Bulldogs in regular-season scoring with 61 points despite not taking over the place-kicking duties until the fourth game. Wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie had a 30-point lead over Rodrigo through the first three games, but Rodrigo caught and passed McKenzie in the last game of the regular season, scoring 9 points against Georgia Tech while McKenzie had his 10th touchdown, finishing with 60 points.
Rodrigo was also named a first-team SEC all-freshman by Athlon Sports media outlet. Making the second team was Missouri place kicker Tucker McCann, who scored 57 points for the Tigers. Rodrigo’s field goal percentage was 81.3 percent; McCann’s 50; Rodrigo’s PAT percentage was 100; McCann’s was 90.7. For the season, Rodrigo missed three place kicks; McCann missed 10. Rodrigo, Zuniga and current Auburn offensive lineman Bailey Sharp all graduated from Sprayberry in 2015, and all were redshirted in the fall of 2015.
Most Improved Special Teams Player award for Rodrigo
Rodrigo enjoyed attending the Bulldogs’ annual Senior Gala awards banquet on Dec. 4, and he was included among the honorees when he was named Special Teams Most Improved Player for the 2016 season. Rodrigo was the starting kickoff specialist for all 12 games, and took over place-kicking duties in the fourth game against Mississippi. In those nine games, he led the team in scoring five times with a season-high 13 points against Kentucky, including the game-winning field goal as time expired as Georgia won 27-24. He also provided the margin of victory the following week with a pair of fourth-quarter field goals to help defeat Auburn 13-7 after the Dogs trailed 7-0 at halftime. That game also featured a rarity: a kickoff that hit the crossbar; it was a career-best 80-yarder for Rodrigo. He was named Special Teams Player of the Week four times during the regular season.
SEC Academic Honor Roll selection for Rodrigo
Seventy-five University of Georgia student-athletes were named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll for the 2016 fall semester, including Rodrigo and 22 of his football teammates. Rodrigo made straight A’s during fall semester, raising his overall GPA to 3.74 to ensure his selection for the academic honor. Rodrigo’s major is digital and broadcast journalism. Athletes from the cross country, soccer and volleyball teams were also chosen.
Rodrigo joins list of Dawgs’ last-minute field goal heroes
Rodrigo took his place among the Bulldogs’ short list of elite last-minute field goal specialists with his game-ending 25-yarder against Kentucky on Nov. 5, and he was featured in the team’s game program for the Nov. 19 match against Louisiana-Lafayette and the Nov. 26 game against Georgia Tech.
Page 58 listed all Georgia kickers who won a game with a field goal in the last two minutes or less, beginning with Ken Cooper’s 36-yarder with 1:30 remaining in 1956 that beat Florida State 3-0. The 17th and most recent entry is Rodrigo’s game-winner that defeated Kentucky 27-24 as time expired. He also provided the decisive points against Auburn on Nov. 12, but his pair of fourth-quarter field goals that broke a tie at 7 for a final score of 13-7 came too early in the period and weren’t eligible for the list.
The most recent entry on the list before Rodrigo is Marshall Morgan, Rodrigo’s predecessor, whose third field goal of the game against Missouri in 2015 came with 1:44 left and gave the Dawgs a 9-6 victory. Morgan also had a game-winner in overtime in 2013 to beat Tennessee 34-31. Also on the auspicious list are Bulldog greats Kim Braswell, Alan Leavitt, Rex Robinson, Kevin Butler, John Kasay, Kanon Parkman, Hap Hines, Billy Bennett, Brandon Coutu and Blair Walsh. Like Morgan, Butler and Kasay are credited with a pair of game-winning kicks. Photos on the feature page included Butler, Morgan, Walsh and Rodrigo.
10 honors for Rodrigo after senior season
Rodrigo’s future man-cave will require plenty of wall and shelf space, if his senior season of high school football is any indication. With his U.S. Army All-American selection and then participation in the 15th annual San Antonio Alamodome event topping the list, Rodrigo was chosen a total of 10 times for postseason honors, six of them as a place kicker-kickoff standout and four times as a punter. Here is the impressive list:
