It wasn’t the ending the Indianapolis Colts were looking for, but they will have the offseason to think about it as they fell 27-24 to the Buffalo Bills on Jan. 9 at Orchard Park, N.Y. in an NFL wild card playoff game.
The game brought Rodrigo’s rookie campaign to an end as the former University of Georgia All-American established himself as the most outstanding first-year kicker in franchise history.
Rodrigo’s four points against the Bills gave him 143 points for the season, easily outdistancing the franchise’s previous scoring best for a rookie — 112 points by kicker Raul Allegre in 1983.
Four more rookie kicking records also were claimed by the Marietta, Ga. native. He converted 33 field goal opportunities and had 39 attempts, sending him past Allegre’s 30 field goals and 35 attempts in 1983. Rodrigo was true on 44 of 46 extra point attempts. A distant second now is Jim O’Brien, who made 36 of 38 in 1970. At that time, of course, the goalposts were resting on the goal line and extra points were 10 yards; today’s extra points are attempted from 33 yards away from the goalposts.
Rodrigo had five more kickoffs against the Bills in the 27-degree weather, with one earning a touchback. Subbing occasionally for Rigoberto Sanchez, Rodrigo finished the season with 25 kickoffs, 14 of which went for touchbacks, with a distance average of 67.2 yards.
